Byron Bay 1st XV continue finals run as the Sandcrabs bow out for 2017

Byron Bay Rugby are on track of making a third consecutive Grand Final after a nail-biting 33-29 win over the Lennox Head Trojans.

In a game of back and forth, the Bay managed to win the game after an intercept pass try from Harvey Bell shortly before he was sent from the pitch after two yellow cards.

Great solid defensive efforts from Byron Bay back row Dru Baggeley, Craig Wallace & Evan Mallory proved vital in the final minutes of the game with Lennox Head camped in Byron’s half.

The Bay now face Ballina for the 3rd time this season in the Preliminary Final at Crozier Park, Lismore on Saturday, the winner going head to head with minor premiers Wollongbar Pioneers.

The Byron Bay Suffolk Park Sandcrabs, however, were not so fortunate going down to Lennox Reserves 34-10 after a gutsy effort with only one man on the bench.

“The crabs might have lost the match but they won hearts of many. An amazing bunch of guys who understand that the importance of rugby and sport is much deeper than just a scoreline. To coach and play with the Sandcrabs this season has been nothing short of an honour. What an amazing inaugural season” – posted Coach and King Crab Matt Larsson on social media.

“The sandcrabs effort has been incredible” said club captain Andy Teuma. “No one expected the Crabs to get to where they did in their first season, especially with playing with a different lineup each week, not sure if we would get a bench”

“An idea was born over some dodgy Asian cuisine in February this year.”

What if we get all the boys together and try and form a secsecond-gradeam? Imagine if Suffolk Park had a team – the Suffolk Park Sandcrabs.

It will be about getting the boys together and having a good time.

Then the boys started to roll through. Mark Howard, Blake Whitaker, Hawley, Kyle Scully, Kane Ridley, Joe Swinson, Rob the Doc, Chud Atkin, El Crusho, Lynchy, Eli Carney and Joel Turner. All genuine Crabbies. Coached by the King Crab.

We became an outstanding outfit. We played our refined and composed brand of footy and we marched into the top 4.[/i] posted Crabbies Flyhalf Pat “Hollywood” Orme.
