Byron’s raid on the opposition line was short-lived and the football gods showed they had a sense of irony when the visitors intercepted a wild pass to score a match sealing third try.The Bay rallied with a consolation try and almost stole an improbable draw after running the ball from their own line in the final minute but Yamba held on to record a deserved victory.

Halfback Nicholls was easily the best for Byron Bay. He was supported by the reliable Harry Hancock, impressive new recruit Max Olson and the ageless Mick Leece.

But in truth, this was a Byron display lacking urgency, discipline and cohesion. Most alarming was the complete absence of any hardness and aggression, qualities that were abundant in the Bay’s early season victories. It remains to be seen whether this was a bad day at the office or whether cracks are starting to form in Byron’s title campaign.

Byron Bay has the perfect opportunity to answer this question in the biggest competition game of the season against fierce rivals Bangalow. The Bay’s neighbors have steadily built momentum during the first half of the season to sit fourth on the table. Another epic chapter in this great rivalry unfolds at the Byron Recreation Fields at 2.30pm on Saturday.
