Byron Bay take on last years Premiers Wollongbar-Alstonville Pioneers in Semi.
It was almost a year ago when Byron Bay Rugby faced Wollongbar-Alstonville Pioneers in the 2015 Grand Final. Last season the Pioneers went undefeated to beat the Bay 3 times, this year tells a different tale.
Byron Bay Rugby, in one of their best seasons in history secured the 2016 Minor Premiership before the end of the regular season to set up a major semi-final against last years premiers. Byron Bay has beaten the Pioneers in both fixtures this season, a 17-16 victory at home in round 3 and then defeating Wollongbar-Alstonville at Lyle Park in round 10 32-31. Both teams only being separated by one point in each game.
Head Coach Paul Jeffery says the squad have been working hard. “We are thrilled to host the major semi as it is a reflection of our performance so far,” He said. “We now have to focus on our number one goal and leaving positive and constructive rugby to put us in a position to keep moving toward the Grand Final.”
Byron Bay look to secure the clubs first ever Premiership after a successful season thus far. The fixture will take place at Red Devil Park on Bangalow Road this Saturday at 3pm. Supporters are encouraged to get there early to enjoy the first two games in the Far North Coast Major Semis. A win for the Bay will give them back to back grand finals.
Byron Bay Rugby Club President Tim Ahern is excited for the big day.
“It’s a big day in the clubs history, we’ve won the minor premiership and now we’ve got to play the best teams this season to win the Premiership. It will be the Clubs first ever.” He said. “We’re very appreciative to Red Devil Park for hosting us for this semi-final. The support has been great.”
